What is Tuta?
Tuta is an end-to-end encrypted and open source email service. Tuta offers a small suite of secure and private productivity applications:
- Encrypted email
- Encrypted calendar
- Encrypted address book
Tuta runs directly in your browser, but standalone apps for Android, iOS, and desktop are available too.
Who is behind Tuta?
Tuta is developed and maintained by the German company Tutao GmbH with a team of a couple dozen. Tutao GmbH formed in 2011 and started developing Tutanota (later rebranded to simply 'Tuta') as a secure email service.
Tuta operates as a "freemium" business model with paid plans for additional storage and features starting at €3/month. Tuta also offers business plans for larger teams or organizations.
How can I get started with Tuta?
Before registering a free account, I recommend you have the following:
- A device with both an internet connection and a trusted web browser.
- A unique, secure, and memorable password/passphrase.
- A safe place to store your login credentials such as a password manager or analog solution such as a personal notebook in a lock-box.
After procuring the above, proceed to:
- Navigate to Tuta's Sign up page.
- Select the free plan to start (you can upgrade later).
- Enter a new email address and password (keep these stored safely).
- Tuta will give you a recovery code in case you forget your password. Write this down and store it safely.
- Familizarize yourself with your new inbox.
